A Top New Fashion Trend: Men's Skinny Neckties

By

Men's fashion trends change just as often as women's do. But instead of being a random, accidental event, fashion is instead something that comes and goes with almost seasonal cycles. One such trend that is making its way back is skinny ties for men. Men’s ties are always fashionable, particularly in the business world, but even neckties have their own fashion sensibilities. In order to follow current trend you should look through magazines that feature men's fashion and you will soon see that to be trendy, you have to have a skinny tie. So those shirts with broad collars are out. You require a narrow collar in order to wear skinny neckwear. This goes to show that there's more to men’s ties than just the ties themselves.

A Brief History of Skinny Ties

Fashion has always been important to men. After the Second World War, it was fashionable for men to wear neckties with extremely eye-catching patterns. This was a result of these same men having to wear uniforms for several years during a traumatic period of time. In the fifties and sixties, fashion had changed yet again. Ties got skinny! With the seventies arrived broad neckties and elaborate patterns came with them. And as the eighties came around, thin ties were back in fashion. Grunge came with the nineties which discouraged neckwear as an accessory altogether. But now, this year, the fashion is once again focused on skinny neckties.

Today's Fashion for Men

It seems, looking at today's fashion, that designers are giving us a slightly more formal look. When wearing narrow and skinny ties you must wear fine quality shirts. These can be cotton, or even silk. A more conservative individual might want a white shirt with a dark tie, or even black one. Men who want to stand out a little more might take a bright shirt with an even more brightly colored necktie, maybe even with short sleeves. Such was a popular style in the fifties and sixties. Drain pipe jeans with trendy boots really look good with these narrow accessories.

Being Unique

Along with a skinny tie comes the tie pin. Those men who want just a little extra something to go with their ties can pick from something quirky, or vintage, or even a traditional tie pin. Gold or silver in a simple design is good for someone looking for a traditional look. But what about going for green, or orange, or a tie pin shaped like a boat, a rocket ship, or even a race car? Looking through vintage tie pins might also give you some ideas, and vintage pins are highly collectible. But there are more accessories for the narrow tie than the tie pin. What about a shirt collar pin? This pin attaches directly under the knot of the tie. It's visible on either side of the knot, and can be just as eye catching as a pin.

A Last Word on Men's Ties

During the sixties and the seventies there was a large push to get away from the strict, repressive lifestyle and its target was the tie. Bra burning and the feminist movement soon followed. In order to be non-conformist and express themselves, men began to ignore their ties. But today women still wear bras, and men still wear ties, which have taken on a greater role for self expression.
